NSW: Carr govt needs to explain dropping of charges

The New South Wales opposition wants the CARR government to explain why it took policeseven months to drop charges against Australia's leading Muslim cleric.

Sheik TAJ ALDIN ALHILALI was charged with assaulting and resisting police after hiscar was pulled over by a police officer in western Sydney's Wiley Park in January.

Those charges were withdrawn in Burwood Local Court today, although traffic-relatedmatters will be dealt with via infringement notices.

Opposition police spokesman PETER DEBNAM says the matter is very embarrassing for thegovernment and for senior NSW police.

Mr DEBNAM says if there was an issue that was going to undermine the police case, itshould have been resolved a long time ago.
