Fed: Costello says no tax windfall from petrol
CANBERRA, Feb 22 AAP - Treasurer Peter Costello said today the Commonwealth would notget a tax windfall from the rise in petrol prices.
Petrol prices rose in most capital cities last week with prices averaging over a dollara litre for unleaded fuel.
Opposition treasury spokesman Bob McMullan today said analysis of tax figures confirmedsuspicions the Howard government would get a massive short-term tax windfall from highpetrol prices.
Mr McMullan said the government received more tax as petrol prices rose, with the GSTrising in proportion to price.
