Fed: Indigenous people 15 times more likely to be jailed: ABS

CANBERRA, Jan 17 AAP - The rate of indigenous prisoners in Australia remained at 15
times that of non-indigenous prisoners in the September quarter, official statistics showed
today.

The rate reached as high as 18 times the non-indigenous rate of imprisonment in Western
Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said there were 3,934 indigenous prisoners
in September - 19 per cent of the prison population.

New South Wales had the highest number of indigenous prisoners with 1,134.
